The Beginning

Picture
The Tranzient Gallery first came into being as an art installation in Nottingham during 2003.  I produced it in response to an old piece of my work, ''The Cart of Curios'' was my first attempt to produce a movable art gallery.  I created while I was studying for my Foundation Diploma in Carlisle.

It was a wooden hand cart which was filled with things that make up me, and was based on the elaborate sketch work I was undertaking at the time and influenced by Le Bazart by Ben Vautier*
Displayed with the Hand Cart was a Profile  Illustration, that was sent out with my university applications. Titled ''The Transient Being''

''The Transient Being'' was designed to show how I saw myself in the world at that time and all the various things that were influencing my life. I based the design on and old astrological diagram as I felt it best complimented my personality.  It was from this I took the name for the new gallery as I just saw it as an extension of myself.

Another interest for me during this period was the Spelling and pronunciation of words, I regularly adopted the phonetic spelling for words as it was spelt in the dictionary. I was also getting fed up with the constant Americanised spelling corrections that computers always want  us to use, this annoyance played out in the end by me adopting the american spelling of tranzient for the very British bicycle Gallery I was building, But that was a few years off being built...

The first time I exhibited anything under the title of the Tranzient Gallery was in 2003 when I converted my studio space into a gallery,
during my time at university. I built three studio installations of the gallery, pictured below is version number two.
As this was the early days of digital photography most of my documentation of this period was done on a 35mm camera and it yet to be transferred in to a digital format.
